CONNECT2 ROTHERHITHE - NEW ACCESS STAIRCASE AND HANDRAILS
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Connect 2 is a nationwide project run by Sustrans to provide networks of
walking and cycling routes through communities linking transport, residential
and commercial areas, schools and public spaces. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund,
the project won a £50m public competition in December 2007 to implement 79
schemes across the UK. Southwark Connect 2 was awarded a £600,000 grant on the
condition that the council completes the project by 31 March 2013.
Southwark's Connect 2 route is approximately 8.1km; extending from Burgess
Park (Camberwell) to Durand's Wharf (Rotherhithe). The focus is the conversion
of a disused railway bridge over Rotherhithe New Road, which will connect Stubbs
Drive to South Bermondsey station. This connection is the top delivery priority
for Sustrans and Southwark Council.
The overall vision is to help create better links for walking and cycling
across Southwark, making it easier for residents to walk and cycle safely to
local shops, schools and other destinations. The improved travel routes will
contribute to improve journey times, enhance access, increase travel choices and
support healthier lifestyles.
A step in the right direction..
Kent Structural were asked to tender for this improved development for the Rotherhithe area, adjacent to Millwall football stadium.
What made this project unique was the 14 individually driven monopiles
that formed the foundation to the new staircase and the time scale required to complete the works from the pre-design stage.
The project had to be completed within 2 weeks from order .
It required a 3d survey and full 3d design to achieve the interface with the new monopiles that were scattered around the site at different levels.
We utilised our 3d leica total station and 3d software to interpret the collected data to provide millimetre perfect results
The project took just over a 4 days for fabrication , almost 8 tonne of steel including galvanising. Within 2 days the staircase was installed and completed with handrail, within the deadline stipulated by the client.
When installed the Staircase required no shims or packing , thanks to the 3d survey and modelling prior to installation.
